Recreation precinct to be named Foster Recreation Park

The Selwyn District Council today approved the name "Foster Recreation Park" for the recreation precinct on Springston-Rolleston Road and Goulds Road. The land, comprising 43 hectares, has been widely known as "Foster Park". The development of Foster Recreation Park began in 1999 when the Council purchased 7.7 hectares of land from the Foster family for a future sports park. This area was adjacent to a 1.9 hectare area of Council-owned land, which was later developed as a dog park in 2009. In the mid-2000’s the Council recognised the need to plan for more recreation space for the growing Rolleston population. In 2010, the Council purchased an additional 33.7 hectares from the Foster family, to provide a total area of around 43 hectares. The recreational precinct concept is to combine indoor and outdoor sports facilities at a centrally positioned site. This precinct would comprise an indoor pool, indoor stadium, sports club headquarters, community park, sports fields, outdoor courts, potential high school and other recreation areas. During the purchase negotiations for the land, the Council agreed for the Foster family to have naming rights to the land.
