In American Fiction, Brown costars with Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross and Erika Alexander as Clifford "Cliff" Ellison, the brother of Wright's lead character Thelonious "Monk" Ellison. Monk and Cliff are shown repairing their relationship in the wake of family turmoil through the movie, while Monk confronts complications from the resounding success of a novel he wrote to make fun of stereotypes in literature. Cord Jefferson, who wrote, produced directed the movie, received two Oscar nominations Tuesday for Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture, while Wright, 58, received a nomination for Best Actor.
Brooks reprised her Color Purple role as Sofia in the new movie musical after she first played the character in the show's 2015 Broadway revival. She costars alongside Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Corey Hawkins and Colman Domingo, among others, in the film.
The 96th annual Academy Awards will be held Sunday, March 10, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will air live on ABC. Jimmy Kimmel will host the awards ceremony for the fourth time.
