Normani 'Devastated' as She Cancels 2024 BET Awards Performance: 'Definitely NOT How I Envisioned This Weekend'

The singer announced on her Instagram Stories that she "had a really bad accident" and injured herself ahead of her scheduled BET Awards performance on Sunday

Normani will, unfortunately, not be hitting the stage at the BET Awards this year.

On Sunday, June 30 — the same day the “Candy Paint” singer was scheduled to perform live at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles — Normani announced via her Instagram Stories that she had no choice but to cancel her performance due to a “really bad” injury.

“I am more frustrated and disappointed than anyone believe me,” she began in a post. “I wanted to get on here and give you guys an update letting you know that while in rehearsals for BET I had a really bad accident and injured myself.”

The Fifth Harmony alum continued saying she’s “normally good for powering through under any circumstance,” but “am just not able to make this performance happen” due to doctor's orders.

“I desperately wanted to give you my best on that stage but performing would delay my healing,” Normani wrote. “I have been going through my process and doing my best to make sense of my feelings regarding this. I am devastated and hate feeling like a disappointment to you but I have to focus on recovering at this time.”

She added, “Trust me, I hear you, and I see you. There is nothing more that I wanted to do than perform for you and also, get back to doing what fulfills me most-BEING ON STAGE.”

The “Wild Side” singer finished her message by thanking fans and BET for understanding her cancellation.

“Sending my love to BET for giving me and all of the other beautiful Black women this opportunity,” the singer concluded. “This is definitely NOT how I envisioned this weekend but best believe I will be championing everyone from home tonight. I'm sorrrrrrrry guys and love you so much 🖤😔.”

Following her announcement, Normani also posted a photo of her injuries, which shows her on crutches wearing a boot on her right foot and a bandage wrapped around her knee. She simply captioned it, “💔❤️‍🩹🥺.”

Normani was slated to hit the BET Awards stage tonight alongside performers like Megan Thee Stallion, Latto, GloRilla, Sexyy Red, Will Smith and more. Her performance would’ve followed the release of her long-awaited debut album, Dopamine, which finally arrived on June 14.

Speaking to The Cut earlier this year, the “1:59” artist addressed the years-long wait for her album after initially announcing it in 2018. “I could’ve put three albums out by now in that duration. I’m not oblivious to that,” she said. “But I felt like I owed it to myself to be able to take my time, and reinvent, and be experimental.”

Normani also talked about how her parents’ cancer diagnoses stifled her creativity at one point in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, saying, "Finding out my mom was diagnosed and then the following year finding out that my dad was diagnosed was one of the greatest challenges.”

She added of her album, "I’ve definitely been tested throughout this process, but there’s a beautiful side to it, too. I’ve given up a lot to be in the position I’m in."
