One person was seriously injured in a fire in a Vancouver apartment early Sunday morning.

In a statement, Matt Trudeau with the Vancouver Fire Rescue Services said emergency responders were called to a three-storey residential building near Nanaimo Street and East 45th Avenue around 6 a.m.

He says crews found smoke coming out of a third-storey unit and managed to contain the fire to the single suite

While other residents were safely evacuated, one person was found in the burned unit in serious condition.

"Crews provided medical aid on scene to the individual and was transported by [B.C. Emergency Health Services] to hospital," said Trudeau.

He says incidents like this are a good reminder to check on your smoke alarm especially "outside each sleeping area," adding "working smoke alarms saves lives."

Officials say the cause behind the fire is still under investigation.
