Kate and the Queen are banned from wearing this

She's one of the world's biggest style icons but it turns out Kate Middleton's bound by some interesting royal protocol when it comes to her fashion choices.

While she's always been known for being pretty conservative (that infamous roller disco outfit aside), there's one thing Kate has to be mindful of when coordinating her outfit.

It's something the Queen is a stickler for as well, and it has all to do with their hands.

Both the Duchess of Cambridge and the Queen are always seen wearing neutral-coloured nail polish, and it seems this is due to royal etiquette.

Royal wardrobe rules state that no coloured nail polish is to be worn to engagements, with insiders saying fake nails and colour are deemed 'vulgar' by the royal family.

Instead, Kate and the Queen are mostly seen rocking neutral shades, with the Queen known for her decades long love of her favourite nude polish - 'Ballet Slippers' by Essie.

OK! reports the Queen's hairdresser sent Essie a letter requesting the shade, because it was "the only colour Her Majesty would wear."

Despite this, even royal wardrobe rules can be broken — Kate has been spotted rocking a ruby red pedicure on the rare occasion she’s bared her toes in strappy sandals.
