As Aries season comes to a close, Taurus season begins. Unlike its predecessor, however, which aligned with the spring equinox, Taurus’ reign comes halfway through the season.

“This zodiac sign occurs in the middle of spring,” astrologist Aliza Kelly of The Practice tells PEOPLE.

A fixed sign in astrology, Taurus is not one that’s prone to change, characterized instead by its steadfast nature. “Broadly, it would ... show up as someone who is very grounded, very loyal and very dependable,” Kelly says.

You don’t have to have Taurus in your sun sign (your birthday sign) to identify with the zodiac, either. According to the astrologer, anyone born with the constellation of Taurus in a “big three placement” of their birth chart — a.k.a. a placement in their sun, which represents the zodiac sign the sun was in when they were born; their moon, which represents the constellation the moon was in at their time of birth; or their rising, which represents the zodiac sign that was on the Eastern horizon when they were born — will have a “strong Taurian influence in their life.”

“Those Taurus qualities are gonna be ... very close to the surface in terms of the structure of [their] personality,” she adds.

What are the Taurus dates?

In 2024, Taurus season will begin on April 19 and end on May 20, when the sun will transition into Gemini.

As Kelly explains, the start date differs from the 2023 Taurus season, which ran from April 20 to May 20. "[There are] 360 degrees in the zodiac and 365 calendar days, so there’s always gonna be a little variation,” she explains to PEOPLE.

What are the key personality traits of the Taurus?

As the first Earth sign of the zodiac, those with Taurus in their big three are often very grounded. “They like when things are stable, when things are solid, when things are reliable, steady [and] consistent,” Kelly tells PEOPLE of Taurians.

Those same traits are also what gives the bull a reputation for being what Kelly says can be perceived as “stubborn” or “hard-headed.”

As Kelly explains, there’s a reason for their obstinance. “It comes from a place of preference and not wanting to feel forced to have something taken away that they know they enjoy,” she says. “If they know that they like to go to the movies on Sunday matinees, then why would we go on Friday night? Why would we change that? There’s a method to that madness.”

In addition to craving stability, Kelly says those with Taurus in their sign are very entwined with the physical material world. “Tauruses are very committed to their physical and body experience here,” Kelly tells PEOPLE. “They’re very sensual and ... they really are connected to their sensory experiences.”

As such, Kelly says Taurus signs take their “physical wellness and their ... comforts very seriously.”

What zodiac signs are most compatible with Taurus?

According to Kelly, the most compatible signs for the bull are fellow Earth signs Virgo and Capricorn.

“All of the Earth signs share a common trait around wanting things to be ... real and rooted in reality as opposed to ... based on emotion ... or passion alone,” she says. “Because of that, the Taurus has a strong connection to the other Earth signs that also share that ... grounded sensibility.”

What zodiac signs are least compatible with Taurus?

When it comes to signs born under other elements, Kelly says that the Fire signs of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius and the Air signs of Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are the least compatible with Taurus. “[There can be] challenges with Fire and Air,” she says. “Fire is ... spontaneous. It very much moves towards its passion, towards its will, toward its desires.”

As for the Air signs, Kelly says they’re much more theoretical, intellectual and flighty than the steady Taurus would prefer.

“Both of those elements, the Air signs and the Fire signs, are not really anchored in the same way as Tauruses, which makes it a little more challenging for Taurus to be able to connect with them,” she says.

During Taurus season, those with the zodiac sign in their birth charts can expect to feel a sense of revitalization, regardless of where the sign may land in their chart. “When you’re in the season of your sun sign or rising sign or your moon sign, [there’s a strong influence in your chart,” Kelly explains. “There’s a sense of renewal.”

She continues: “You’re entering a beginning stage. It’s almost like the clock resets and you have a chance to establish new patterns, new habits, new intentions that support the next year.”

The 2024 Taurus season is particularly special. According to Kelly, one of the most important astrological happenings of the year takes place on April 20, when Jupiter will conjunct Uranus for the first time in 12 years. “Jupiter is the planet of luck and expansion and Uranus is the planet of breakthrough and rebellion, so this cosmic alignment ... signifies new auspicious beginnings surrounding our ability to come up with new ideas and solutions,” she says.

According to the astrologer, Taurus signs will feel the impact of this “very astutely." She explains, "Jupiter and Uranus are both in the sign of Taurus as well, so there’s a strong Taurian nature to this.”
