A shooting in Chicago on the Fourth of July left two women and an 8-year-old boy dead, authorities said.

Multiple shooters who emerged from two cars are believed to have fired several shots into a home in the city’s Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood around 6 a.m. Thursday, local police said, according to CBS News. Officers who responded to the scene found five gunshot victims.

“All I saw was two people jumping off the porch," a witness told ABC 7 Chicago. "After I heard the shots, I was looking out the window. I thought it was fireworks."

Two women, identified by relatives as Capri Edwards and Nakeeshia Strong, were killed in the shooting, according to ABC 7 Chicago. Strong was Edwards’ aunt, relatives reportedly said.

According to NBC Chicago, Strong’s son, 8-year-old Bryson Orr, was also struck and taken to the hospital in critical condition. However, he died later that day, police said, per the outlet. Two other children, ages 5 and 8, were wounded in the shooting.

Markita Scott, Edwards' mother, told CBS News Chicago that her daughter died trying to shield her children from the bullets and that she hopes an arrest will be made soon.

"I'm just numb," Scott told the outlet. "I just want somebody to come forward with some kind of information so [there's] justice for my daughter."

Frank Mixon, Strong's teenage son, described her as “an amazing woman,” according to NBC Chicago. "Nobody showed me how to work hard like her,” he said, per the outlet.

In a statement shared to X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson paid tribute to those impacted by the shooting.

“On behalf of the City of Chicago, we express our deepest condolences to the families and the Grand Crossing community mourning the lives lost in the shooting that took place this morning,” he said.

The statement added, “We will continue coordinating with our partners at the Chicago Police Department, 5th Ward Alderman Desmon Yancy, and victim services partners to support this community on a path of healing from this tragic incident.”
