Police watchdog investigating after fatal armed assault in Sherbrooke, Que.
A 52-year-old man who was seriously injured in an armed assault Friday morning in Sherbrooke, Que., has died.
Quebec's independent police watchdog, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) , opened an investigation into the circumstances of the police intervention involving the Sherbrooke police.
The BEI steps in when someone who is not a police officer is seriously injured or killed while being detained or during a police operation.
According to preliminary information, the BEI says at 2:40 a.m., a call was made to 911 by a person making "incoherent remarks."
The BEI says Sherbrooke police officers arrived on the scene minutes later but left following their assessment with the occupants of the residence.
According to the BEI, at 5:04 a.m. a call was made to 911 for a seriously injured person outside the residence. A man was pronounced dead.
The incident occurred at 267 Gillespie Street.
Police are searching for a suspect. No arrests have been made.
Quebec provincial police are investigating the incident in conjunction with Sherbrooke police.
Police were still on the scene as of midday Friday, but a provincial police spokesperson said the homicide appears to have been an isolated event.
