Prince Harry reveals joke he shared with William as they walked behind Queen's coffin
Prince Harry has revealed the joke he shared with his brother as they walked the same route to Westminster Abbey for the Queen's funeral as they had for their own mother's.
During the first of four prime-time interviews about his controversial memoir Spare, aired on ITV on Sunday night, Harry said the brothers had "sort of joked to each other", saying: "At least we know the way."
The siblings famously walked behind their mother's coffin after her death in 1997, aged just 15 and 12 at the time, in a moment which William, the Prince of Wales has since described as a "very long, lonely walk".
Images of the brothers retracing their steps for the Queen's funeral in September brought memories back for many as they echoed the images from over 20 years ago.
Describing the moment, Harry said: "Just recently... my brother and I were walking the same route, and we sort of joked to each other and said, at least we know the way."
But he said the difference was the "levels of emotion", saying: "Because our grandmother had finished life. There was more, I think, of a celebration and respect and recognition to what she had accomplished.
"Whereas our mother was taken away far too young."
Elsewhere in Harry: The Interview, the duke described feelings of guilt, telling broadcaster Tom Bradby that he had only cried once after the death of his mother, at her burial.
He said that after the "decision was made" for the brothers to walk the route of the coffin, he would never have let William walk it alone, saying: "There's absolutely no way that I would let him do that by himself."
A string of revelations have already been leaked from the memoir, Spare, which is due to be published on Tuesday.
Harry has come under fire for some of the claims in the book, including that the Prince of Wales physically attacked him and his claims that he killed 25 Taliban while serving in Afghanistan.
Sunday night's ITV interview is the first of four broadcast appearances over the coming days, with the duke also speaking to Anderson Cooper for 60 Minutes on CBS News on Sunday night, Michael Strahan of Good Morning America on Monday and Stephen Colbert on the Late Show on CBS on Wednesday morning UK time.
