Princess Mary pulls son from school after bullying claims: 'Difficult'

Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik have removed their son, Prince Christian, from his boarding school after a bullying scandal came to light earlier this year.

The couple also announced that their eldest daughter Princess Isabella will also not be joining the Herlufsholm Boarding School as planned.

Princess Mary and Prince Federik have previously condemned bullying claims at the school as “completely unacceptable” and “heart-breaking”.

The royals released a new statement on Sunday, after a preliminary decision from Denmark’s National Agency for Education and Quality criticised the school.

“The question about our son Christian’s and our daughter Isabella’s choice of school has been very important for us, and the unfortunate matter has brought many and strong opinions to play in the public,” their statement reads.

“That is completely understandable when it deals with the well-being of children and young people. At the same time, it has been important to stand by our basic idea that major decisions must be made on an informed basis. We now have that basis.

“It has been a difficult process for us as a family, but, based on the overall picture and our special position as Crown Prince Couple, we have chosen that Prince Christian will stop at Herlufsholm and that Princess Isabella will not start in 9th class at the school after the summer holiday.”

The statement also states the royals have not decided where Christian and Isabella will be attending school. The family will make a decision on their future choice of schools over the summer.

Princess Mary and Prince Federik also sent their best wishes towards Herlufsholm, saying it’s their ‘hope’ that the school will now be able to ‘create a culture in which all thrive and feel safe.’

This comes after a documentary on TV2 was released, with students alleging assault and abuse running rife through the boarding school.

Herlufsholm is a prestigious school founded for Danish nobility in 1565, and Prince Christian was the first future king to be a student at the school.
