READ: Jury’s $83 million verdict against Trump in E. Jean Carroll defamation case

A jury of nine New Yorkers handed down an $83.3 million verdict against former President Trump on Friday for defaming columnist E. Jean Carroll.

Carroll accused Trump in 2019 of sexually assaulting her decades earlier, and the jury was selected last week to determine how much the former president must pay for denying her story. The judge had previously ruled the denials defamatory.

The verdict, which the jury returned after less than three hours of deliberations, includes three sub-parts.

Trump was ordered to pay $11 million for a reputation repair program for Carroll, $7.3 million in other compensatory damages for her emotional suffering and $65 million in punitive damages, which are intended to deter the former president and others from committing similar conduct in the future.
