Rescued Animal Moms Being Treated to Massages, Mud Baths and More for Mother’s Day

In honor of the holiday, Farm Sanctuary is inviting people to donate and gift “spa services” to three of its well-deserving animals

Farm Sanctuary is giving some well-deserving animal moms a little pampering for Mother’s Day — and you can help!

The nonprofit animal rescue organization, which operates sanctuaries in Watkins Glen, N.Y., and Los Angeles, is showing its appreciation for three of its hard-working moms by offering a menu of “spa services” for the holiday, according to a press release.

Those interested in supporting the special cause can make a one-time $35 donation to provide Evie the sheep with a relaxing back massage, Mia the pig with a soothing mud bath or Liberty the cow with a “blowout” brushing. Supporters also have the option of adding another “service” or gifting a full “spa package” of all three treatments for $90.

On its website, Farm Sanctuary shared the heartbreaking stories of the three moms’ origins and how they came to find a forever home with the organization. Evie was rescued in October 2023 from a North Carolina farm, where she was one of more than 200 animals being severely neglected and mistreated.

As caregivers nursed the sheep back to health, they discovered she was pregnant. On Feb. 17, Evie gave birth to twins, Jeanne and Margaretta, and jumped right into her new parenting role. Farm Sanctuary describes Evie as “a gentle, caring mother.”

Mia was rescued from a backyard butcher in January 2018, along with her five day-old piglets. The family was living in squalid conditions without food and water. Now, Mia and her children — Crawford, Helena, Iman, Wayne and Woody — are all healthy and thriving at Farm Sanctuary.

Liberty the cow has a Hollywood star to thank for her happy ending. One day after winning a Best Actor Academy Award for Joker in February 2020, Joaquin Phoenix, with help from LA Animal Save, rescued Liberty and her calf, Indigo, from a Los Angeles slaughterhouse.

Since finding her home at Farm Sanctuary, Liberty has befriended another cow mom, Jackie, who was grieving after the death of her calf.

“If anyone deserves extra care and attention, it’s these mothers,” Gene Baur, president and co-founder of Farm Sanctuary, said in a press release of the three animals being honored for Mother’s Day.

Anyone interested in treating Evie, Mia or Liberty to spa services can make a donation via Farm Sanctuary’s website by May 12.

Farm Sanctuary was founded in 1986 “to combat the abuses of factory farming, advocate for institutional reforms and encourage a new awareness and understanding of farm animals and the benefits of plant-based living,” according to the rescue’s website. The New York and Los Angeles sanctuaries house a total of more than 600 rescued animals.
