Shannen Doherty Reveals the Moment She Felt Her “90210” Costars Turn on Her: 'Nothing but Competition'

Though Shannen Doherty's 'Beverly Hills, 90210' costar Jason Priestley said he never felt a sense of rivalry among the cast, she suggested, "Maybe it's because I am female"

Shannen Doherty says she felt her relationship with her Beverly Hills, 90210 change as her star begin to rise.

According to Doherty, 52, the dynamics on set shifted when she appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone in 1992 alongside Jason Priestley and Luke Perry.

"It turned into nothing but competition after that Rolling Stone cover came out," she told Priestley, 54, on Thursday's bonus episode of her podcast Let's Be Clear with Shannen Doherty. "Maybe it's because I am female. But I remember when we did that cover, I had a bunch of cast members come into my dressing room and tell me how wrong it was that I did a cover of Rolling Stone without them and that I should have demanded that everybody be on the cover."

Doherty recalled telling her costars that she wasn't in a position to "tell Rolling Stone what to do" at the time and that she was thinking of her career.

"What a huge honor to be asked to be on this magazine cover, so yeah, no, that's your problem. That's not mine," she added. Priestley was surprised at the friction, acknowledging that he was never confronted with the same sense of rivalry.

"I think that was a different day and age, right?" the Charmed alum continued. "Men were paid more, you were paid more than me. You were No. 1 on the call sheet. I was No. 2, and you were instantly deemed the quarterback and I think that that was particularly with Aaron [Spelling]. It was a very male mentality."

Doherty noted that the same male-centric mindset could have been the reason it was easier for the 90210 cast to confront her as "opposed to going to the men."

"Or maybe they just knew you would laugh and walk away," she laughed. "You were always very diplomatic, but with a sense of humor, so you would have handled it differently than I did."

Doherty took on the role of Brenda Walsh in Beverly Hills, 90210 from 1990 to 1994. She was eventually written off the show after frequent disturbances and interruptions on set. During the show's season 5 premiere, fans discovered that Walsh was moving to England to enroll in acting school.

On Monday's episode of the podcast, the actress opened up about the personal circumstances that contributed to her behavior at the time and ultimately led to her exit from the series.

Doherty admitted to unprofessional demeanor on set in her her final days on 90210, sharing that it had a lot to do with marital problems she was navigating with then-husband Ashley Hamilton, whom she alleges — and who has himself since acknowledged — was struggling with drug addiction.

"I was in a really horrible marriage, and there were things that were transpiring in that marriage that made it really hard for me to be on time for work," she explained, acknowledging that her costars often waited for her and worked longer days because she didn't show up to work on time. "And I know that that became a very big problem for the rest of you, as it should be."
