Shocking jewellery heist unfolds at Melbourne shopping centre

Dramatic vision from a Melbourne shopping centre shows the moment three armed men in hazmat suits smashed up a jewellery store before fleeing with stolen goods.

Shoppers hid in nearby stores at the Brimbank Shopping Centre in Deer Park as the three armed men entered shortly before 11am.

Video shared by Seven News reporter Estelle Griepink shows the men smashing a cabinet with a weapon before stuffing jewellery into bags.

Police rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area. Another video shows shattered glass scattered across the floor as one of the men runs past bystanders.

"Police have secured the site and are currently investigating. The health and safety of our customers, tenants, and staff is our priority," the shopping centre said in a statement.

"Staff were amazing despite all the chaos," one woman said online in response.

Another shopper said they were in Target where staff pulled down the shutters to protect those inside.

The men involved remain on the run, Victoria Police confirmed to Yahoo News Australia.

There were no injuries during the incident.
