Shop temporarily closed after alleged racist attack

A shop in Birmingham that was at the centre of an alleged racist attack has been temporarily closed down.

More than 100 people took part in protests last month, outside the International Superstore on High Street in Erdington, calling for its closure.

Five men, aged from 22 to 45, have since been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and racially aggravated assault before being released on bail.

The closure order was granted by Birmingham Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

The alleged attack is claimed to have been sparked following a parking dispute on 17 May, during which a man, woman and teenage boy were "struck", West Midlands Police said.

The force has recognised the store as a source of significant distress for many people in Erdington.

It said it hoped the temporary closure of the store would "significantly improve the tensions and reassure the community who have been negatively impacted by the disorder originating from this property".
