SNL Host Ayo Edebiri Addresses Her Controversial Comments About Musical Guest Jennifer Lopez: ‘It’s Wrong to Run Your Mouth on a Podcast’

Saturday Night Live seemingly put Ayo Edebiri in the hot seat with its spoof game show Why’d Ya Say It?

Earlier this week, ahead of her hosting gig on SNL where she would be joined by musical guest Jennifer Lopez, the internet resurfaced clips from a 2020 episode of the podcast Scam Goddess, in which a yet-to-be-famous Edebiri minimized Lopez’s career, calling her a “scam.”

“Her whole career is one long scam,” Edebiri says in the clip. “She thinks, like, she’s still good, even though she’s not singing for most of these songs.”

In this weekend’s sketch, Kenan Thompson played the host of a fictional game show asking contestants to explain why they left bizarre comments on social media. He asked why Edebiri’s character wrote, “Die,” on an Instagram video of Drew Barrymore celebrating in the rain. Another contestant had to explain a comment he left Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Instagram saying he was “hot for Congress.”

Edebiri’s character ultimately had enough of the scrutiny and launched into a monologue about posting foolish things online when you’re young and clueless, seemingly alluding to her prior comments about Lopez.

“OK, OK, we get it,” she said. “It’s wrong to leave mean comments, or post comments just for clout, or run your mouth on a podcast and you don’t consider the impact because you’re 24 and stupid.”

Lopez didn’t appear alongside Edebiri in any sketches, but the pair did join forces for a promo released earlier in the week and stood together on stage to close out the episode.

Watch the sketch above, then weigh in on the Feb. 3 SNL hosted by Ayo Edebiri featuring musical guest Jennifer Lopez.
