Susan Sarandon was ready to take on her role as mother-of-the-bride soon after her daughter Eva Amurri got engaged to chef Ian Hock in February 2023. So much so, that mere months later, she was already planning her look for the wedding — and she was committed to nailing the summery theme.

On June 29, the Thelma & Louise star, 77, celebrated the couple at their “French garden party” nuptials in a custom floral-print suit by SuitShop.

The brand's co-founder, Jeanne Foley, shares with PEOPLE exclusively all that went into creating the "appropriately chic" and custom ensemble, from Sarandon’s involvement to the details nodding at the fairytale Hudson Valley, N.Y., ceremony.

“Our collaboration with Susan on her custom floral suit began in December 2023, after working with her daughter Eva on more traditional wedding suits for her fiancé and two sons [Amurri shares Major James, 7, and Mateo Antoni, 4 with ex-husband Kyle Martino],” Foley shares.

The actress knew “from the get-go” what she wanted to wear (in this case, a floral-print outfit with structured shoulders and a tailored silhouette) and planning months in advance gave her and the SuitShop team plenty of time to get the style just right.

In that time, samples and 3D renderings were sent, fittings in New York were held and, in two weeks, Sarandon had a “truly unique” ensemble.

Her jacket and trousers were decorated in the whimsical “Colorful Wildbloom” print featuring watercolor daffodils, violets, morning glory, delphiniums, roses and poppies woven into greenery.

“Flowers in general represent love and natural beauty, themes which are simply perfect for a wedding,” Foley tells PEOPLE.

The pieces were also made with SuitShop’s Perfect Drape fabric, a “slinky material with just a hint of give and flex.”

“Susan was very involved in creating her custom design,” Foley adds. “She helped with the creative direction by sourcing inspirational examples that led to a bouquet-esque floral pattern we all loved.”

And while vibrant, Sarandon’s suit was the perfect complement to Amurri’s white corset bridal gown that she purchased at Bridal Reflections in N.Y.C.

The Oscar winner's attire indicates that mothers of the bride today are looking for more modern looks to wear to their children’s weddings.

“We do get a lot of women in general coming to us because they want an alternative to traditional dresses as special-occasion attire. This is especially true for those looking to get dressed for weddings, from brides to guests and more,” says Foley of the current trends.
