Taylor Swift Reveals She Wasn't Planning to Announce New 'The Tortured Poets Department' Album at Grammys
The pop star addressed the announcement of her 11th studio album during night one of her Eras Tour shows in Tokyo
Swifties may have had to wait for the announcement of Taylor Swift's new album had she not taken home a Grammy.
During night one of her Eras Tour stop in Tokyo on Feb. 7, the pop megastar, 34, told the crowd that she was actually planning to reveal the news of her 11th studio album The Tortured Poets Department in Tokyo had she not won a golden gramophone.
"I had this plan in my head, and I told my friends — I told Jack, but I hadn’t really told many other people," Swift told the crowd during the Evermore set of her concert, per a fan-posted video. "I thought, 'Okay, so if I’m lucky enough to win one thing tonight, I’m just going to do it. I’m just going to announce my new album.'"
She added: "I told myself if I'm lucky enough to win anything tonight, I'm just gonna do it. I'm just gonna announce it. My backup plan was that I was gonna announce tonight in Tokyo!"
During the set, Swift also revealed that she's been working on her latest LP since right after she wrapped up Midnights.
"I’ve been working on it for about two years, I kept working on it throughout the US tour. When it was prefect in my opinion — when it was good enough for you — I finished it. I am so, so excited. Soon you'll get to hear it. Soon we’ll get to hear it together,” the "Maroon" singer told the audience.
Swift continued: "Everyone asks, 'Why do you make so many albums?' It's like, 'Man, because I love it so much. I'm having fun. Leave me alone.'"

As the "Mastermind" musician accepted her 13th Grammy for best pop vocal album — her "lucky number" — Swift announced the brand-new album, The Tortured Poets Department, which is due April 19. (Later in the show, she made history, becoming the first artist to ever win four album of the year trophies, this time for Midnights.)
"I want to say thank you to the members of the Recording Academy for voting this way. But I know that the way that the Recording Academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion of the fans," she said. "So I want to say thank you to the fans by telling you a secret that I've been keeping from you for the last two years, which is that my brand new album comes out on April 19."
Swift added, "It’s called The Tortured Poets Department. I'm gonna go and post the cover right now backstage. Thank you. I love you. Thank you."
