Theo James is looking back at his role as a romantic time traveler.

During a roundtable conversation with The Hollywood Reporter — which also included fellow actors Bowen Yang, Anthony Mackie, Ricky Martin, Kelsey Grammer and John Goodman — the Emmy nominee recalled doing scenes opposite of himself in HBO’s The Time Traveler’s Wife.

In the science fiction TV series, James, 39, played Henry DeTamble, who has a genetic order that causes him to time travel sporadically when he’s stressed. Because of this, James portrayed several versions of the character, with some of the versions of Henry meeting each other.

“I played against myself … I put everything in it — some of my best work,” James told THR. “I didn’t watch the show before the premiere [in May 2022] because, at the time, everyone was like, ‘F--- yeah! This is f---ing awesome!’ I’m feeling pretty good about this!”

HBO’s TV adaptation, which was based off the 2003 novel of the same name, followed the 2009 film starring Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana.

Though the series received positive reviews, including one from New York Times critic Mike Hale, the show was canceled after one season in July 2022. Six months later, The Time Traveler’s Wife and other titles were removed from HBO Max after the WarnerMedia and Discovery merger.

“I thought, ‘Oh God. Oh God. I think I’ll have another drink,’ Then I had to show up to the thing, which had been f---ing destroyed,” James remembered, referring to the cancelation and subsequent removal of the show from HBO Max (The Time Traveler's Wife series is now only available to watch if bought on Amazon Prime Video).

After the cancellation, James appeared in his next HBO series, The White Lotus. In season 2, James played Cameron Sullivan, an arrogant investment manager married to Daphne (played by Meghann Fahy).

James admitted that The White Lotus accelerated his career.

“One hundred percent, it definitely opened doors,” he told THR.

“I love playing that character,” James said of Cameron. “He represented Americana to me in its best — and the problems with it. He’s charming but quite calculating.”

James went on to compare that character to his new one in his new 2024 Netflix series: “So with The Gentlemen, I wanted to do the opposite — which is very British and a twat.”
