Tommy Hilfiger returns to the catwalk with a love letter to New York City
Each season, we break down everything you need to know about the new collections in our franchise, The Fashion Week Cheat Sheet. After speaking to the designers about their inspiration, their hero pieces, the faces on the catwalk and the names on the front row, we present your complete guide to autumn/winter 2024.
It was a big return to the catwalk for Tommy Hilfiger, who has not shown since September 2022 – and he came back with a bang, unofficially kicking off fashion month with a huge celebration of New York City, a preppy collection and a very starry front row.
Entitled 'New York Moment', autumn/winter 2024 was a nostalgia-filled collection from the classic American designer, who wanted to celebrate the many years he has spent in the NYC, and the special energy the city possesses. It was a fun-filled show with plenty of Tommy signatures and some very covetable pieces, which proved that comfort and dressing up can go hand in hand.
"I love the idea of packing almost 50 years of my adult life that I’ve been coming to the city – and every single thing that I’ve loved about it – into a New York moment," he told us.
Below, discover everything you need to know about the collection.
Theme and inspiration
Tommy Hilfiger's autumn/winter 2024 collection was an ode to New York City. The designer – who was returning to the capital after a few seasons off – wanted to pay tribute to what he called "a lifetime of memories" in the Big Apple, creating "the perfect New York Moment".
"The collection is inspired by New York, the home of Classic American Cool, channelling the city’s unique style and reinterpreting it with a distinctly Tommy twist," he explained. "It’s the spirit of prep, modernised through a New York lens."
His trademark prep was everywhere – we saw rugby shirts with pleated skirts, baseball caps with shirts and ties, varsity jackets, hoodies and tweed separates – but the styling felt dressy and polished. "It’s uptown with a downtown spirit, elegant with an edge, a one-night only tribute to that New York lifestyle," he explained.
In the show notes, the brand explained that this season's silhouette was drawn from a period when Hilfiger relaxed the codes of American prep by playing with wider trouser legs, relaxed button downs, and boxy outerwear. "It’s Tommy’s Americana come to life in shades of red, white, and blue that infuse the brand’s iconic DNA with modernity."
Setting
When it came to finding the show location, Hilfiger wanted it to be a true experience. He settled on taking over the the Oyster Bar at Grand Central Terminal, where there were touches of the brand's signature red, white and blue throughout the venue, while guests enjoyed music by Questlove and Jon Batiste, and sipped on Martinis.
Hero pieces
With the polo shirt poised to make a comeback, there were more than a few in this collection that we could see flying off the shelves, and we loved Hilfiger's take on the pleated skirt, worn low on the waist and styled with knee-high boots. And, the many baseball caps will no doubt be a hit.
Who was there?
The latest Tommy Hilfiger ambassador and woman of the moment, Sofia Richie Grainge sat on the front row alongside her husband Elliot Grainge. They were joined by the likes of Damson Idris, Sonam Kapoor, Kelly Rutherford, Becky G, Mia Regan and Jasmine Tookes, while Paloma Elsesser walked the runway.
