Woman found dead, injured man airlifted to hospital following armed incident near Dunedin

A woman's body has been discovered following an armed incident at Seacliff, north of Dunedin.

A woman has died during an armed incident north Dunedin, police have confirmed.

Police confirmed in a statement the woman's body was found Tuesday at a house near Seacliff, around 30 kilometres north of Dunedin.

St John ambulance confirmed a man was airlifted to hospital in a "very serious" following the "unexpected and tragic" armed incident.


Otago Coastal area commander Inspector Jason Guthrie said a search of the property was conducted after finding the injured man, Fairfax Media reports.

"Soon after [finding the man] police conducted inquiries at a nearby address and in one of the addresses they located a deceased female.

"Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances and that investigation is obviously in its very early stages," Guthrie said.

Police were not saying exactly what happened but did say there appeared to have been a firearm involved and that they "responded accordingly".

It was an isolated incident and there was no threat to public safety and people are informed to return to their daily routines.

Police confirmed earlier they were handling an firearm situation with armed police and detectives attending the scene.

Emergency services were called to the Truby King Reserve near Seacliff around 8.20am Tuesday.

Police senior sergeant Craig Brown said several cordons are in place around the area and people are advised to avoid the Coast Road between Karitane and Warrington.

"There was mention of a firearm. We're treating the incident with due caution," Snr Sgt Brown said previously.

Armed police and detectives are reportedly moving through the reserve.

The St John ambulance confirmed a person was airlifted from the location of incident on Russell Road in Seacliff.

"The patient was transported in a very serious condition to Dunedin Hospital emergency department by rescue helicopter."

The Truby King Reserve is the home of the former Seacliff Lunatic Asylum but today is used for various leisure activities.
