Wellington CBD car park to demolished

The Wellington car parking building which has been cordoned off since the November 14 earthquake will be demolished.

The Wellington City Council (WCC) has decided to take the car park belonging to Reading Cinema down after engineers' reports show the damage is so significant it is not safe for anyone to enter.

The cordon around the Tory Street, Courtenay Place car park will be in place until the building is demolished.

Reading International is working with the council, engineers and the demolition company to demolish it as soon as possible, but a date has not yet been set.

Mike Scott, WCC's building consents and compliance manager, said they realise the cordon has been in place longer than originally thought but public safety is the priority.
