Trudie Styler Recalls Falling in Love with Italy with Sting, Says the Country 'Has a Special Place in Our Hearts' (Exclusive)

After more than 30 years of marriage, that's still amore for Sting and Trudie Styler!

Speaking to PEOPLE ahead of her win at the Globo d’Oro Awards in Italy on Wednesday, July 3, the actress and producer revealed that when it comes to her love story with the rocker, the country holds sentimental value.

"Sting and I fell in love with Italy many years ago — so much so that after one of our kids was born near Pisa, we spent years looking for a home for us all. Italy has always been incredibly kind to us," Styler, 70, tells PEOPLE exclusively.

The actress, who attended the award show with the Police frontman, 72 adds, "Since the 1980s when I made films here in Rome at Cinecittà, then Sting wrote one of his most emotional albums near Pisa the year after his parents died, and at the same time I gave birth to one of our kids, Italy has a special place in our hearts for many reasons."

Styler, whose documentary film Posso Entrare? An Ode to Naples bested dozens of other nominations to win best documentary, also detailed her love for their home in Tuscany.

"For 30 years now we’ve returned again and again to our place in Tuscany, with all of the family — our little kids are now all grown up and now bringing their own children," Styler, who shares kids Mickey, 40, Jake, 39, Eliot, 33, and Giacomo, 28, with Sting, says (The "Fields of Gold" singer is also dad to son Joe, 47, and daughter Fuschia, 42, with ex Frances Tomelty).

The Tuscany estate is a place where the family "congregates together and connects."

"We all eat together, we read, swim, take walks, play games, we watch movies,' Styler says. "We love to catch up with what’s going on in the vineyards and we’ll always have our wedding anniversary celebration there."

Opening up about what the kids think about their parents' busy work schedules, Styler says they are "proud" of them.

"They appreciate that we are busy and fulfilled," she says. "The kids all have their own paths and careers and they’ve got good work ethics, so we’re proud of them for that."

Speaking about her film, which she wrote and directed, Styler says she "fell in love" with the people she met along the way.

"Everyone was so open and welcoming, they were so willing to share their joys and their tragedies. I quickly felt so attached to them and their stories," she says. "Also historically the city [of Naples] is fascinating — conquered more than 12 times, there are so many influences there, so culturally there is so much to see and do and learn about."

Meanwhile, Sting is preparing to embark on his Sting 3.0 tour with drummer Chris Maas and longtime collaborator and guitarist Dominic Miller. After playing a string of shows in Europe over the summer, Sting 3.0 will kick off in North America at the Fillmore in Detroit, Michigan on Sept. 17 and will wrap in Los Angeles at the Wiltern on Nov. 16.

In May 2023, Sting told PEOPLE that Styler's favorite song written by him is "End of the Game," a deep cut about two foxes on the run.

"Trudie loves this song, which is about two foxes being hunted by a pack of hounds, with the end result being that they're killed," he said. "I said, 'Well, why is this your favorite song?' And she says, 'Because it's about us.' I said, 'Well, explain that.' And she says, 'Well, if it was just me and you against the world, that would be enough.' So that's her interpretation. It's a rather beautiful one."
