Post Biden-Trump debate poll finds 4 in 10 Democrats think party should replace president as 2024 nominee: Live

Joe Biden should be removed as the Democratic Party’s 2024 presidential nominee following his disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump, according to 41 percent of Democratic voters surveyed in a new poll by USA Today/Suffolk University, the latest blow to his ailing campaign.

The president, 81, met with his family at Camp David in Maryland on Sunday to discuss his political future in the wake of his frail, confused appearance in Atlanta last week, which only heightened doubts about his cognitive ability and sparked calls for him to drop out of the race for the White House.

Biden’s family reportedly encouraged him to stay the course as he spent Sunday with First Lady Jill Biden, his children, and grandchildren, with the possibility of firing campaign advisers said to have been discussed.

Top Democrats are believed to have been in crisis talks over the last three days amid speculation the party could move to replace Biden with another candidate.

US Vice President Kamala Harris, Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Governors Gavin Newsom, Gretchen Whitmer, Wes Moore, and JB Pritzker have all been named as possible emergency successors.

Giuliani spokesperson calls bankruptcy proceedings ‘partisan and politically motivated’

21:35 , Kelly Rissman and Gustaf Kilander

Last month, the judge in former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani’s bankruptcy case slammed his failure to comply with deadlines and inability to keep bookkeepers to manage his “mess” of financial records.

Giuliani’s bookkeeping was heavily criticized during a three-hour-long hearing in his high-profile Chapter 11 bankruptcy case. Judge Sean Lane also heard heated arguments from Giuliani’s creditors, who want a trustee to seize control of his finances and force the disgraced mayor to file monthly operating reports on time.

“There are reasons to be concerned here,” the bankruptcy court judge declared, conceding that the former mayor’s records appear to be a “mess.”

“At a certain point, a failure to comply with [court] orders means my voice will take on a decided edge,” the judge warned at the time. “If people don’t obey court orders, it’s a profound problem.”

On Monday, a spokesperson for Giuliani said: “Mayor Giuliani is simply following available options to combat an entirely partisan and politically motivated proceeding. Make no mistake, this is directly connected to the Biden regime’s ongoing efforts to take down President Trump and anyone willing to stand up against them.

“I can promise you this. No matter what they do, they can’t take away Mayor Giuliani’s most important assets— integrity, courage and love for America. And just like Steve Bannon and others, they’re trying to silence Mayor Giuliani. Well, good luck with that.”

Supreme Court grants Trump immunity for ‘official’ acts in landmark ruling that will delay trial

21:20 , Ariana Baio, Alex Woodward

Former presidents have some immunity from criminal prosecution for official actions, the Supreme Court ruled on Monday – extending the delay in the criminal case against Donald Trump on charges he plotted to overturn his 2020 presidential election loss, and all but ending prospects he could be tried before the November election.

In a 6-3 decision released on Monday, the court rejected Trump’s suggestion of total immunity but said some of the actions laid out in the federal election interference indictment related to his official acts and are protected.

“The president enjoys no immunity for his unofficial acts, and not everything the president does is official. The president is not above the law. But Congress may not criminalize the president’s conduct in carrying out the responsibilities of the executive branch under the constitution,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the majority.

The court’s conservative majority granted him “presumptive immunity” for actions that the former president claims were in the “outer perimeter” of his official duties.

‘Americans should be scared’

20:20 , Oliver O'Connell

President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign has shifted into a full-court press against Donald Trump in response to the incumbent’s disastrous debate performance last week.

On a press call Monday, Biden campaign surrogates including former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn, Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, and deputy campaign manager Quentin Fulks warned that American democracy would disappear in November if Democrats and concerned Americans did not rally behind the president. The call was organized in response to the Supreme Court’s decision granting Trump and all US presidents limited immunity from prosecution for official acts. It also appears to be in response to newfound concerns from his own party that Biden isn’t a strong enough candidate to win the presidential election.

Notably, the Biden campaign team only took questions from four journalists on the call, only one of whom was a White House beat reporter.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has warned that PresidentJoe Biden’s chances of winning the state are now over following his dismal debate performance last week.

Biden had hoped to silence critics who have questioned his age and mental sharpness when he took on Donald Trump on stage during the first televised debate of the 2024 election on Thursday evening.

But instead of putting concerns to rest, the 81-year-old reinforced the stereotype with a bumbling, stumbling performance that is said to have left members of his party divided on whether he is the right candidate to run for the White House.

Supreme Court awards Donald Trump some immunity from prosecution: Live updates

Breaking: US Supreme Court awards Trump some immunity from prosecution

15:40 , Joe Sommerlad

Trump, and any future president, has total immunity from criminal prosecution for official actions, the US Supreme Court has just ruled in one of the most consequential cases for the American presidency in the history of the office.

In a 6-3 decision released on Monday, the court said that the Constitution gives presidents total immunity covering official acts – but not private.

“Under our constitutional structure of separated powers, the nature of presidential power entitles a former president to absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for actions within his conclusive and preclusive constitutional authority,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote.

The ruling, issued at the tail end of the Supreme Court’s term, will delay the state and federal trials the former president faces as prosecutors and defense attorneys determine which crimes Trump is immune from.

But the justices’ long-awaited decision already benefits Trump because it has caused delays in proceedings – likely pushing those trials until after November’s election, which he could well win.

Here’s the very latest from Ariana Baio and Alex Wooward.

Trump asks if Biden is ‘choker’ or ‘cognitive mess'

Donald Trump has lashed out at Joe Biden in his latest Truth Social post about Thursday’s presidential debate.

The former president wrote:

Only three things could have been the reason that Crooked Joe Biden, the worst President in the history of the United States, failed so badly at the debate on Thursday night. THEY WERE: 1) “TRUMP WAS REALLY GREAT!” In all fairness, and I say in complete and total modesty, many, on both sides of the political spectrum, have said it was the greatest single debate performance in the long and storied history of Presidential Debates. Thank you! 2) CROOKED JOE “CHOKED” LIKE A DOG. 3) JOE IS A COGNITIVE MESS! It could be combinations of all three, but ask yourself this question, as a proud citizen of the United States of America (which no longer means a thing, to many, as millions of people flow into our Country, totally unchecked and unvetted!), would you rather have a President who is a CHOKER, or a President who is a COGNITIVE MESS??? Raskin admits Democrats are having ‘serious’ talks about dropping Biden

One of the president’s most influential allies in the House of Representatives, Jamie Raskin, became the first elected Democrat to admit to a news program on the record this weekend that his party is having “serious conversations” about whether Joe Biden should continue as the Democrats’ presidential nominee.

Raskin appeared for an interview with Ali Velshi on MSNBC and explained that the party would be unified in the fall — whether it was behind Biden, or another nominee he indicated the party could possibly choose before then.

“Obviously, there was a big problem with Joe Biden’s debate performance,” Raskins said.

“And there’s also just a tremendous reservoir of affection and love for Joe Biden in our party. So this makes it a difficult situation for everybody, but there are very honest and serious, rigorous, conversations taking place at every level of our party.

“One thing I can tell you is that regardless of what President Biden decides, our party is going to be unified... JD Vance blames media while defending Trump’s lies

Sunday 30 June 2024 20:00 , Ariana Baio

Ohio Senator JD Vance, who is on the list of potential running mate picks for Donald Trump, deflected criticisms about the former president lying during the presidential debate, and suggested it was partially the media’s fault.

While speaking with Margaret Brennan on Face The Nation, Vance was asked why Trump lies about things like abortion, his record as president and January 6.

“I think the media is running interference on a lot of this stuff,” Vance said in response.

The senator began to list things that the media flagged as false statements that he believed were true including misrepresented claims about late-term abortions.

“And most importantly, we know that the media seems totally uninterested, in fact-checking Joe Biden from any of the number of false claims that he made,” Vance said before Brennan interrupted him.

While speaking with CBS News directly after the debate, Rubio was asked to clarify what Trump meant by “Black jobs” when he made the unsubstantiated claim that migrants would take “Black jobs.”

“You know what he meant by that, he meant jobs that are filled by African Americans in America, and others, Americans in general,” Rubio told CBS News.

“But the question in specific was about Black voters – he didn’t ask that question, the moderators did and so he segued into the impact that it’s had on Black voters,” he added.

72 percent of voters think Biden should not run, poll says

Sunday 30 June 2024 18:00 , Ariana Baio

After the first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, 72 percent of voters think the president should not be running, according to polling from CBS and YouGov.

Out of 1,130 registered voters polled, less than 30 percent believe Biden should be in the 2024 presidential race when asked, “Regardless of whether or not you would vote for him, do you think Joe Biden should or should not be running or re-election as president in 2024?”

On Thursday, the president performed poorly in a debate against Trump, often stumbling over words and sharing his policies with a hoarse voice. The aftermath has left voters, and members of his own party, concerned about his ability to win over the former president.

When asked what reason Biden should not be running for re-election, 86 percent of respondents said his age while 59 percent said they had concerns about his ability to campaign.

More than half of respondents also said Trump should not be running for president with 91 percent referring to his felony conviction as a reason. In addition, 89 percent said Trump should not run because of decisions he might make while in office.

Kremlin refuses to comment after Trump claims he would settle war

Sunday 30 June 2024 11:00 , Alexander Butler, Joe Middleton

The Kremlin has refused to comment on Donald Trump’s claim he would “settle the war” in Ukraine if he was re-elected in November.

Trump made the claim during Thursday’s US presidential debate, where he and President Joe Biden competed to appear tougher on foreign policy.

“As far as Russia and Ukraine, if we had a real president, a president that knew – that was respected by Putin, he would have never – he would have never invaded Ukraine,” he said.

Biden called Putin a “war criminal” and warned that if Russia is allowed to succeed, the Russian president would not stop at Kyiv.

“He wants all of Ukraine. That’s what he wants,” Biden said. “He’s killed thousands and thousands of people,” the president added.

Putin was repeatedly referenced by both US presidential candidates during Thursday’s election debate as they vied to show who was tougher on foreign policy. “Go ahead, let Putin go in and control Ukraine, and then move on to Poland and other places. See what happens then. He has no idea what the hell he’s talking about,” Biden said of Trump.

Will the Supreme Court’s Jan 6 decision affect Trump?

Sunday 30 June 2024 02:00 , Ariana Baio

The Supreme Court’s decision to narrow how Jan. 6 defendants may be charged with “obstruction of an official proceeding” will likely only not impact Donald Trump’s federal election interference case.

On Friday, the majority of the Supreme Court justices agreed the government needs to establish that a defendant attempted to or “impaired the availability or integrity” of a record, document, object or thing used in an official proceeding to charge someone with obstruction of an official proceeding.

They argued that the criminal charge was intended to be used in white-collar crime cases and, without specificities, could be used broadly just to give prosecutions the ability to seek 20-year maximum sentences.

Trump is unlikely to see significant change in the charges brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith. He previously indicated the former president’s interference with fake electoral vote certificates would still fall under the new interpretation.

Republican congressman trying to remove Biden using the 25th amendment

Saturday 29 June 2024 23:00 , Eric Garcia

A Republican congressman from Texas is proposing legislation that would call on Vice President Kamala Harris to convene President Joe Biden’s cabinet and invoke the 25th amendment of the US Constitution.

Representative Chip Roy of Texas proposed the legislation after Biden’s lackluster debate performance against former president Donald Trump in Atlanta on Thursday.

Under the 25th Amendment of the US Constitution, the vice president and the majority of cabinet officers can declare “that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office” and that the vice president may assume the duties of the presidency.

The legislation put forward by Roy specifically claims that Biden has “repeatedly and publicly demonstrated his inability to discharge the powers and duties of the presidency.”

“We’ll be filing it today or early next week, depending on the language being drafted,” Roy told The Independent.

Trump’s New Jersey properties are at risk of losing liquor license

Alcohol regulators in New Jersey are asking Donald Trump’s golf club properties in the state to prove they deserve a renewed liquor license after the former president was found guilty on felony charges of falsifying business records.

The hearing, which is set for July 19 approximately a week after his sentencing, is being requested by the New Jersey Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control after they found that Trump has a “direct beneficial interest” in at least two liquor licenses, the New Jersey Attorney General’s office said.

New Jersey law prohibits a person convicted of a crime “involving moral turpitude” from having a liquor license. Liquor licenses are required to be renewed every year by July.

Trump National Golf Club Bedminster as well as Trump National Golf Club Colts Neck are owned and operated by the Trump Organization which is currently run by Trump’s adult sons Donald Trump Jr and Eric Trump.

But the alcohol regulators say their review found that the former president is “the sole beneficiary of the Donald J Trump Revocable Trust” - the financial entity that allows him to retain assets and own his businesses.

Now the golf clubs must prove to the state, by a preponderance of evidence, that they’re qualified to maintain the licensures.

Black Democrats share workplace photos after Trump’s bizarre debate line

Donald Trump’s unsubstantiated claim that migrants threaten the availability of “Black jobs” during the first presidential debate has Black people, including members of Congress, asking: what is a Black job?

“They’re taking Black jobs and they’re taking Hispanic jobs. And you haven’t seen it yet, but you’re going to see something that’s going to be the worst in our history,” Trump said on Thursday night.

The former president’s comment was seemingly an attempt to expand his political reach to more communities of color through his commonly used anti-immigration rhetoric. Enacting strict immigration policies is one of the cornerstones of the former president’s campaign.

But his vague classification of jobs as exclusive to Black or Hispanic people did not land well.

“I’m still trying to figure out what a Black job is,” MSNBC host Symone Sanders-Townsend said on All In With Chris Hayes on Friday.

“Am I at my Black job right now? I don’t know.”
