Twitch Star Kai Cenat Won't Face Charges After N.Y.C. Riot

The 22-year-old streamer originally faced two counts of inciting a riot and unlawful assembly, but Manhattan prosecutors decided to drop charges after he shared a public apology

Twitch streamer Kai Cenat will not face charges after he was accused of unintentionally causing a riot in New York City last year.

According to a statement issued to PEOPLE by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, prosecutors decided not to pursue charges against Cenat, 22, on the condition that he post a written apology for causing damages to the city and local business owners, and that he and two others — Denzel Dennis and Muktar Din — pay restitution.

"The People are declining to prosecute the arrests against Kai Cenat, Denzel Dennis and Muktar Din after they paid a combined total of over $57,000 in restitution, posted a public apology to social media and had no new arrests since the incident," the DA's office wrote in a statement.

On Aug. 4 2023, crowds gathered in Manhattan's Union Square Park after Cenat — one of Twitch's most popular creators with over 10 million followers — organized a giveaway for fans. Cenat said he would be handing out computers, Playstation 5s, microphones, keyboards, webcams, gaming chairs, headphones and gift cards during the event.

The NYPD said in a press conference at the time that thousands of fans showed up. Soon, the crowd became rambunctious and at least three officers were injured, New York City Police Chief Jeffrey Maddrey said. The police added that 60 people were arrested including 30 minors.

Following the incident, Cenat originally faced charges of inciting a riot and unlawful assembly.

Per the District Attorney's Office, Cenat posted an apology to Snapchat, where it will remain for 24 hours. Cenat paid $55,000 in restitution to the Union Square Partnership, Inc. — a group of local business owners — while Dennis and Din were required to pay $1,049.50 each to the group.

In his statement, Cenat wrote in part that he apologized for "the disruption and damage to the community, the park, the vehicles, and the storefronts in the area."

"I wanted to do something cool and fun for people and did not think it was going to turn into something that caused harm to the city, and I should have thought more about the post before I announced it," Cenat wrote. He added, "Going forward, I understand that with my platform and followers, I have a huge responsibility and must always think about the impact and consequences of my posts."
