Man walks into a bar… It’s the stuff dreams are made of. An unknown musician was plucked from obscurity Friday night to perform in front of a huge crowd and ended up stealing the show.
At pop band Take That’s gig in Glasgow, Scotland on Friday night, their scheduled warm-up act was established chart-topper Olly Murs, but he got stuck in London after his flight was cancelled.

Meanwhile in Glasgow, singer and guitarist Daniel Rooney was performing in the bar of the hotel across the road fron the venue, where he was spotted by entertainment journalist Ross King. The Daily Mail reports that, when King heard of Murs’s absence, he was quick to recommend Rooney be enlisted as his replacement – with just 30 minutes’ notice.
@TheRossKing epic!!! Well done you and Daniel Rooney for stepping in. Certainly didn’t expect to see you singing to a @takethat crowd 🤣 pic.twitter.com/b8mUrCai5G

Hence Rooney found himself performing in front of 14,000 fans, singing a bunch of old favourites. Videos on social media show the crowd singing along, and they were quick to sing his praises on social media, saying he had “smashed it,” and some going so far as to say they preferred him to the booked act. Ouch.
Take That frontman Gary Barlow added his thanks, saying on social media that Rooney had “saved the day.” Rooney’s Instagram following as of this morning is 3,567 followers. Watch this space.
