If somebody were to play Vick Hope in a film adaptation of her life, it would be Zendaya. ‘She’s absolutely killing it, I am obsessed with her,’ Hope tells ELLE UK in a game of Ask Me Anything. ‘I love following her on Instagram because I love the way she plays with fashion, her and Law Roach [Zendaya's stylist]. I love the way she plays with beauty too.’ As for the film’s name, it would be called Hopeless. ‘Or Hopeful!’ she quips.

Of course, the latter is far more applicable to Hope’s story than the former. Born in Newcastle, Hope studied Modern Languages at Cambridge University before joining Radio 1, where she currently hosts the Drive show. That’s not all: she’s also the host of ITVX's Vick Hope's Breakfast Show, the author of two children’s books and presents the Women’s Prize for Fiction Podcast.

The biggest lesson that becoming a broadcaster has instilled in her is to be cautious of her audience and what they might be dealing with. ‘You forget that you’re broadcasting to millions of people,’ she explains. ‘Because we’re always taught – and you always have to remember – that you never know what somebody is going through when they switch the radio on. We're a community. But sometimes when you’re having a laugh, you’ll say things like you would with your friends in the pub and it’s a bit throwaway but someone else might really remember it. And they do.’

Despite tying the knot with Calvin Harris in an intimate ceremony earlier this year, the couple's most-played song of 2024 so far isn't one of Harris' award-winning tracks but rather 'Fairground' by Simply Red. 'I don't know how this has happened but we've got into the habit over the past few weeks of, when we need a little boost in our house, we put it on and we dance around the kitchen,' she says. 'It makes you feel amazing!'

From her favourite rumour she's heard about herself to her favourite linguistic phrase (spoiler alert: it's Argentinian slang), watch the rest of Vick Hope's Ask Me Anything interview at the top of this article.
