The Voice season 19 alum tied the knot with Kelsey Charles in a small, intimate ceremony at the 4 Eagle Ranch in Beaver Creek, Colo., on Feb. 29.

Ian tells PEOPLE that the scenic venue — nestled in the valley of the Eagle River basin, with sweeping, snow-covered mountain views — is where he and his now-wife first met.

"We opted to go back to Beaver Creek and create the ultimate full-circle moment by exchanging our vows in the same place we met," he says, adding that the couple's wedding day was "nothing short of perfect."

The pair carefully planned a ceremony filled with sentimental details that highlighted not only their love story but their respective family roots.

"It was important to us to create an intimate and highly personalized ceremony so many of the elements included had an underlying meaning," he explains. "From bringing family artifacts such as Kelsey’s grandfather’s shearling blanket to a piece of my late mother’s wedding dress sewn into my jacket, there were nods to family and the ones who mean the most to us throughout the day."

Ian asked his fellow Voice contestant Jim Ranger and his wife Camilla — whom he called his "dear friends" — to officiate the couple's outdoor wedding ceremony.

"With handwritten vows and just our immediate family in tow, we went to the middle of the field and were married amongst the mountains and the ones we love most," he recounts.

The newlyweds first met in October 2022 at a private musical festival in Beaver Creek that was sponsored by the western boot brand Lucchese, where Kelsey works in marketing. Ian was one of the performers at the event.

"We met by chance, after being introduced on a whim by the festival promoters. I noticed Ian was in dire need of a new pair of boots — and the rest is history," Kelsey tells PEOPLE.

While they said "I do" surrounded by snow, the pair got engaged on Dec. 20, 2023, during a tropical trip to Hawaii, where they spent a few days in the Volcanoes National Park. Ian popped the question to Kelsey at the secluded Green Sands Beach.

"I had been carrying the ring way too long trying to find a private place," he recalls of the lead-up to the proposal. "When we hiked out to the cliffs, I knew it was the perfect spot and I surprised her while she was looking out at the ocean."

Now that he and Kelsey are officially husband and wife, Ian tells PEOPLE they are excited to take on life together, whatever may come.

"Marriage to me means making a lifelong commitment to your partner and best friend to always have each other’s backs through every high and low in life and to always support each other’s dreams and become a family," he notes.

For Kelsey, marriage is "a promise to forever be each other’s biggest champion and also the one to hold the other down."

Of their future plans, she adds, "I can’t wait to start a family and bring them on this journey that is our crazy, little life."
