“The Voice”'s L. Rodgers honors coach Reba McEntire with tattoo of her lyrics

It's surely not the first Reba McEntire tattoo, nor will it be the last.

Every season on The Voice, there are just some coach-artist pairings that feel meant to be, and in season 25, one of those pairings is easily L. Rodgers and her coach Reba McEntire.

The evidence? There is, of course, the fact that L. was a one-chair turn in the Blind Auditions and has now made it all the way to the Top 12 live performances. But the bond goes further than that: Rodgers recently revealed that she got a new tattoo — a heart wrapped in a ribbon with the words “Who I am is who I wanna be,” lyrics from Reba’s song “I’m A Survivor,” which also famously served as the theme song for her sitcom. That’s someone who really loves their coach right there.

When explaining why she chose her song for the Top 12 live round, Patty Griffin’s “Up to the Mountain (MLK Song),” L. elaborated on why her coach means so much to her: “Being autistic, it’s always more difficult to have that connection with someone else, but Reba, she sees me."

Singing this song is the “most vulnerable” she’s ever been on stage, she says, but she did it to honor the people in her life who have helped her get through times of self-doubt, saying “it’s people like Miss Reba who have picked me up and kept me going.” It’s a special bond.

L. delivers another solid performance with some power vocals. Dan Smyers from Dan + Shay commends her ability to tell a story, adding “we are so lucky to have you on The Voice.” Meanwhile, her coach couldn’t be prouder for the way L. connects with a song and audience: “When you start singing I can feel it because you feel it first.”

And how does Miss Reba feel about the tattoo in her honor? Oh, she’s a big fan. When L. posted a picture of her new ink on Instagram, Reba was in the comments with a big ol’ “Awe!!!!!! Amen, Sister!” When she sees it in-person during rehearsals, she tells L., “That is so cool, thank you for that!”

The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays on NBC.
