Whoopi Goldberg calls out “The View” producer's failed attempt to play her off with Oscars music: 'I'm not going'
"You're going to play the EGOT off, talking about the Oscars?" Sunny Hostin said, while the camera cut to Brian Teta looking embarrassed.
The View producer learned the hard way that you don't use Oscars music to play the GOAT/EGOT off the Hot Topics table.
Executive Producer Brian Teta attempted to get show moderator Whoopi Goldberg to move Monday morning's show to a commercial by teeing up an orchestral score over her reaction to The Holdovers star Da'Vine Joy Randolph's Best Supporting Actress victory at Sunday night's Academy Awards — mimicking the way awards shows typically amplify backing tracks when winners go overly long with their acceptance speeches.
"I have been rooting for her for a while," Goldberg said of Randolph, before looking toward Teta (who was off-camera at first) when the music played.
"You're going to play the EGOT off, talking about the Oscars?" legal expert Sunny Hostin asked Teta, who the camera later showed sheepishly giggling over the attempted bit.
Goldberg wasted no time telling Teta exactly how she felt about the move, too.
"Well, here's the deal: I'm not going, because I want to make sure that I finish my sentence," the 68-year-old Ghost actress and former Academy board member said. "Which was: I've been waiting for this [Best Supporting Actor winner] Robert Downey Jr. for as long as I've known him, and I've worked with him. He's one of the great journeyman actors on the planet... and, we'll be right back."
The exchange wasn't the first time Goldberg has called Teta out during a live show. In May 2023, while she criticized fellow ABC program American Idol for what she suggested was a perpetuation of judgmental culture, she paused her thought to address one of Teta's off-camera actions.
"Did you really just do that?" she said, looking toward Teta, who replied: "I'm saying, we've talked about this, that it's gotten better, you like it now. Remember?"
The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET on ABC.
