Whoopi Goldberg is paying tribute to the people who shaped her in a new book.

The EGOT winner, 68, announced the forthcoming publication of her new memoir, Bits & Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me, exclusively with PEOPLE. The book, coming this spring from Blackstone Publishing, will tell the story of Goldberg’s life, career and family in her own words.

“This book is dedicated to my mother and my brother and our time together as a small, funny little unit. It’s dedicated to anyone who’s found themselves on a scary path not of their choosing or dealing with loss," Goldberg says in an exclusive statement.

'Bits & Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me' by Whoopi Goldberg

Bits & Pieces isn’t Goldberg’s first book. The actress previously published multiple children’s books, including 1992’s Alice and the Sugar Plum Ballerinas series, and her books for adults include If Someone Says ‘You Complete Me’...Run!.

Goldberg’s memoir, however, shifts gears, and is "semi-autobiographical," according to a press release obtained by PEOPLE. The book turns the focus inward to Goldberg's life growing up in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City with her mother, Emma Harris, who died in 2010, and older brother, Clyde K. Johnson, who died in 2015.

Goldberg will also touch upon an incident when her mother returned home from the hospital with no memory of her children — which was "the exact moment the trajectory of Goldberg's life changed." The book will serve as a way for the author to preserve the memories of her loved ones on the page.

“Whoopi Goldberg is an icon and superstar whose work I have thoroughly enjoyed and admired for many years,” said Rick Bleiweiss, Blackstone’s Head of New Business, in the press release. “She also happens to be a person with a great deal of humanity…it is a fascinating and compelling read.”

Goldberg has long been a celebrated part of the entertainment industry. In 1984, she debuted on Broadway in Whoopi Goldberg, which was developed from her one-woman show The Spook Show. In addition to her long-running, Emmy Award-winning tenure as a host on daytime talk show The View, Goldberg has appeared in films such as 1985’s The Color Purple, where she garnered an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, 1990's Ghost, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and the Sister Act franchise, among others.
