Three monks expelled after brawl video goes viral

Three monks have reportedly been expelled from a monastery in east China after a video of them brawling went viral.

The footage, which was shot inside the grounds of the Ningguo Buddhist Temple in Yangzhou on Sunday, shows the three men in orange and brown robes engaged in a tight tussle, with punches being thrown throughout.

One man pulls back, only to return seconds later to bash the others over the head with what appears to be a mobile phone.

The shocked gasps and shouts of onlookers can be heard as a crowd of other monks and lay people try to pull the men apart.

The temple’s abbot posted a message to social messaging platform WeChat to say the temple authority had expelled the three monks over the dispute, the South China Morning Post reported.

The chief monk said the three men, who were reportedly intermediate leaders in the temple, had been in disagreement over temple management issues.
