Young father loses wife and both parents to Covid-19: ’So cruel’

A father-of-five has revealed the tragic last words his dying wife uttered before Covid-19 claimed her life, less than a year after the virus claimed both his parents.

Massimo Peluso said he would make his wife get the jab if he could turn back time, adding that her gynaecologist had advised her not to.

In just over one year, Massimo has lost his parents, aged 70 and 58, to Covid-19, as well as his wife Alessandra De Rosa in November 2021.

Pregnant with twins, the young woman, who had not been vaccinated, was admitted to hospital with the virus and a decision was made to deliver the babies early to save them, according to local media.

Two months later, the premature twins, named Aurora Pia and Angelo Pio, are reportedly still dependent on a ventilator at Santobono Hospital in the Italian city of Naples.

Massimo described the pain he feels at the loss of his wife and parents, while his twin babies remain in intensive care, as “unimaginable”.

“My wife sent me a message, it was on the afternoon of 11th October, the last time she wrote. She said to me ‘I’ve fought like a lion, but I don’t think I can do it anymore. Take care of our children, they need you’," he recalled.

“I didn’t want to believe it. I prayed that my wife would at least be saved. A year earlier I lost both my parents within 20 days. I thought ‘why does life have to be so cruel?’

The couple have three other children, Antonio, Alessandra and Alessia, with Massimo saying his wife was "born to be a mother".

“Even when she found out she was positive with Covid, she wasn’t discouraged.

“She gave me courage, even when she was in hospital, even when, after a few days, she started to get scared.

“She was unvaccinated, she listened to the advice of the gynaecologist treating her.

“Before being intubated, I saw terror in her eyes during our video calls. She was unable to speak and said to me ‘I’ll write to you because I no longer have the strength’.”

He added: “If I could go back... I would not listen to the gynaecologist, but it is pointless now to think about what might have been.

“I am vaccinated and right now I have Covid again. I’m asymptomatic, but I was last time too. This virus is cursed, my parents were healthy in November 2020. What more can I say?”
